April Showers Bring Beautiful April Days

Cherry Tree In Bloom
Cherry Tree Blooming in April

April Showers

The saying goes, April Showers, Bring May Flowers, but I have to say whoever came up with that saying forgot about all the beautiful trees that are bursting with color in April. From Redbuds to Cherry Trees, April shows us all that we have survived another Winter.

April Flowers

Sure we are getting the showers, and we all know we need the rain, but the sights and sounds of April make one take a moment and pause. Just inhale deeply, close your eyes and listen to the birds chirping happily as they work on building their nests. Can you smell the sweet fragrance of the daffodils? When you open your eyes, do you see how the grass is greening up? (Who has mowed their lawn for the first time already?)

My husband and I have started back on our hopefully daily walks at Howard County’s Western Regional Park. Typically it takes about 35 minutes, but last week it was 45 minutes. When I wondered out loud why it took 10 minutes longer, he reminded me of all the times I stopped taking photographs. Oh well, there is that.

The picture above is my Cherry Tree I bought from Behnke’s around 2010. I love this tree, and while the blooms only last a short time, it makes me so happy. When the nursery closed in 2019, many of you shared beautiful photos of your gardens, letting me know that you bought this or that from Behnke’s. Someone started the hashtag #bornatbehnkes, which was so much fun.

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
