I just realized this forum was out here, and am very happy to join. I love gardening, having inherited that love from my mother and her family – I have very sweet memories of my maternal grandfather’s vegetable and flower garden in coal country in Pennsylvania when I was tiny. The scent of dill STILL makes me think of sunny summer afternoons in my grandfather’s yard!
I was a loyal Behnke’s customer in the late 2000s, sometimes bringing my Mom along, and was pretty upset when I learned about the closure. These days, I mostly visit Patuxent Nurseries, which is nice although somehow, not the same at all either.
I like growing herbs and flowering plants. I often have had to resort to growing in containers, because we’ve had deer, groundhogs, squirrels and birds “helping” a lot. Oh, and one season we had to have a well pump replaced, which dug up a VERY fine herb garden I had going. Lesson learned: do NOT site your herbs around a well, no matter how well you think it helps locate where not to mow!
Okay, enough about me, now I’ll probably do a good deal of lurking, but will be reading often. Thanks Stephanie and Larry for your work keeping Behnke’s name alive!
