I have so many memories of growing up in Beltsville, Md, on the nursery. There was always something going on each and every day. From making mud pies in the pansy beds (after they were dug up, of course) to selling unique rocks and duck feathers, I would find to our customers.
The Behnke swans are one memory that always jumps out to me because I love this photo my grandmother, Rose Behnke, took of our swans in the winter. Some of you might recall once upon a time, Behnke’s had two large ponds. The ponds were located on the south side of the nursery. One was where the main parking lot was and the other upfront by US 1 on your left as you drove into the garden center.
These swans were always chasing my brother and me. I guess because we were always trying to peek where their nests were. Some of the best times were when the pond froze over, my grandfather would break up the ice for the ducks and swans, and we would get to throw out their food. Then, boy, would they come running, flapping their wings and trying to beat each other there.
I hope you will share some of your memories here on this forum. Maybe you have that particular plant you bought #bornatbehnkes? Or you remember a conversation with one of our staff that helped you with your garden. Were you one of the folks that would stop in to wander around and relax? I can’t wait to see what you share with us.
