I came to gardening through an interest in tropical biology. Living in Wisconsin, tropical foliage houseplants were as close as I could get. I got a college degree in horticulture and worked for a few years as the “houseplant expert” at Felly’s Flowers, a florist in Madison. That was followed by five years with a wholesale grower of foliage, annuals, herbs and perennials in the Dallas, Texas area (Nortex Nursery Industries.) We finally settled in Maryland, and I worked at Behnke Nurseries from 1984 to closing in 2019. I was involved with growing and selling perennials throughout my years at Behnke’s. We now live in southern Wisconsin and I am learning to garden in the north. (We have only been back a few weeks, so I haven’t learned much.) My plant interests still include tropical foliage and perennials. I try to use native plants when possible and discourage use of potentially invasive plants. I occasionally look up to see what kinds of trees and shrubs are in the area.
