Small, potted bromelliad – how will I know when/if to repot?

I see a bit of info around about these plants.  My husband had a rather good-looking one growing when we got married (almost 30 years ago, gasp!), but we don’t have it any more, so when I saw these tiny ones at a local Lowes, I bought a couple, they’re Guzmania Bromelliads, about 3 inches tall, in very small pots.  They are doing great so far in the house (it’s been rainy and damp, here, but with the heat still on we have humidifiers running), but I’m curious whether they will outgrow those tiny pots.  My husband’s plant was in about a 6 inch wide pot.
