Albert and Rose Behnke’s Arboretum

One of my favorite memories is going to my grandparents’ (Albert and Rose Behnke) home in Burtonsville, MD, in April, when all the tulips bloomed as we drove up the driveway.
Below is a photo of some of Behnke’s Best planting thousands of Dutch bulbs in the garden. While it was a lot of work in the Fall, seeing the results in April and May was worth it. In early April, one would still see all the daffodils blooming in the shady wooded areas of their property, and the tulips would start opening up. Of course, the snowdrops and crocus would have already bloomed.
That was what was so fantastic about walking around their gardens. Which, by the way, were open to anyone who wanted to wander around.
There was always something going on at Albert and Rose Behnke’s Arboretum.
