7/11 Opens Their Doors

Today, September 21, is the Grand Opening of the 7/11 in Beltsville. We drove to their soft opening last week and chatted with the owners. I was a little early, but they invited my husband and me in and showed us around. WOW, it looks lovely, and they are all very excited to be opening up.

After years of being located a few blocks off Garrett Ave, this new location will be much nicer. You can get into the store off of Howard Ave and US 1.

If you have one of those electric cars, they have a charging station just for you. Or if you are a gas guzzler like me, there are more pumps for us, with a lot of room in between. This is super nice since I never like pulling into a gas station where the gas pumps are so close together that you end up backing up to get around.

Behnke’s And 7/11? What?

You might be wondering why I’m mentioning a 7/11. Many of you are familiar with the fact that the current location of this store used to be part of Behnke Nurseries in Beltsville. However, before Behnke’s ownership, it was Dawnrose and the Tin Dipper; even before that, it was the home of the Minutemen (The Minutemen were a small, elite force of citizen-soldiers who were ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. They were chosen for their enthusiasm, reliability, and physical strength and were usually 25 years of age or younger. They were the first armed militia to arrive at a battle during wartime).

I am delighted to see 11350 Baltimore Ave, Beltsville, MD, now housing this 7/11. Why, you ask? Because the owners are the same outstanding individuals who served all of us at Behnke’s throughout the years.

Whenever we needed a break, we’d follow the well-worn path straight to Garrett Ave. Coffee, hot dogs, lottery tickets, donuts, and for some, cigarettes – we all made our way over to the 7/11. Who would have ever imagined they would relocate to our property one day?

I have said many times about how things change, and when we decided as a family to close our beloved Behnke Nurseries, we wondered what the property would become. Numerous ideas were considered, and there was even talk of creating a townhouse community at one stage.

However, those plans did not materialize. Ultimately, the property will now serve as the future location for this new 7/11 and The Ryder Truck Rental.

If you are in the area, I hope you stop in for a snack and say hello! I will be stopping in later today!

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
