Memories Of The 1988 Oktoberfest At Behnke’s

Sonja Behnke Festerling and her grandson Steven Fleming at the Behnke Oktoberfest in 1989

The other day, I was trying to explain Behnke’s Oktoberfest in the ’80s and early ’90s to someone. If you were there, you know how special this event was to everyone who came out to Behnke’s in Beltsville year after year.

I’m not sure exactly how the idea for Oktoberfest first came about. With my grandparents hailing from Germany, it was undoubtedly a nod to them. However it started, it became a tremendous success thanks to the many who contributed their time and spirit!

One of the most fantastic parts was that Oktoberfest ran for two weekends, with the entire nursery and staff involved. Dirndls and lederhosen were everywhere, and traditional German folk dancers performed daily. Guests enjoyed games, a huge train garden, the opening of the Christmas Shop, and, of course, delicious food!

While sorting through stacks of old photos to show my friend, I found one of my favorites featuring my mother, Sonja Behnke Festerling, and my son, Steven Fleming.

If you were lucky enough to have attended one of our Oktoberfests, I’d love to hear your memories! Just click the link below to share.

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
