Did You Watch The Super Bowl?

Like many, last Sunday, we had the Super Bowl on in our house. And yes, my team won. If the Ravens could not be in it this year, I decided to go for another bird! I have been less than impressed with the commercials the last few years, so much so that I doubt I could name any. Well, except, of course, the Budweiser Horses. But even then, I don’t recall what it was actually about. I always did like the one with the golden lab puppy and the young colt. I hope they will return the old Bud Wise Er frogs from long ago. They always made me laugh.

This year, I kept a pen and paper and wrote down the commercials I liked the most. Then, after the game, when my friends on Facebook started talking about who liked what I could list mine. But how quickly my mind forgot what Lay’s was about. All I wrote down was Lay’s Potato Chips. It took a friend and fellow Behnke customer to remind me about that.

What About Those Commercials?

So here we go!

  1. Lay’s Potato Chips – Little Girl Growing a Potato Plant This one stole the show with its sweet story of a little girl nurturing a potato plant, to see that her efforts resulted in Lay’s chips. (Thank you, Carol, for reminding me.)
  2. Pfizers Knock Out Cancer—I loved Pfizer’s Super Bowl commercial this year! It had a young boy battling cancer, dressed as a boxer. He punches a pull cord like a boxing bell and makes his way home, cheered on by doctors and supporters ending running into his mom’s arms. Such a powerful message of strength and hope!
  3. WeatherTech—The Grandmas First started with one of my all-time favorite songs, Born To Be Wild, which made me laugh. I guess I am at an age where I find humor in wild grandmas. After all our generation had the best cars, best music and well we just rocked!
  4. Coors Light—Slow Monday ~ Sloths It took me a little bit to get used to seeing sloths dressed as people, but I started laughing at all the slow-motion action as they woke up Monday morning after the Super Bowl.
  5. Harrison Ford – Jeep, I was not sure where this commercial was going, but it was nice hearing and seeing all the heroes in our lives with Harrison Ford narrating it. But his last line, when it was clear it was about Jeeps, and he said, “The Jeep makes me happy, even though my name is Ford,” was great!
  6. Hellmann’s Mayonnaise – Meg Ryan & Billy Crystal The Hellmann’s mayonnaise Super Bowl commercial featured Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in a funny nod to their classic 1989 movie, When Harry Met Sally. They recreated the famous diner scene where Meg Ryan’s character fakes an over-the-top reaction—except this time, it was about the joy of tasting a sandwich made with Hellmann’s mayo!

So, what was your favorite commercial this year if you watched it? Leave your picks in the comment section below!

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.

  1. Good choices and good descriptions. I didn’t watch the whole game but I did see the Pfizer Knock Out Cancer commercial. I agree – it was inspirational.
