Rediscovering the Gardenews: A Behnke Time Capsule

The other day, I was reminded about our Behnke GardeNews print newsletters, which we mailed out to our customers a few times a year. There is so much gardening information, and we have it all on our website.

If you ever visited Behnke Nurseries between 1994 and 2008, you might remember receiving our GardeNews newsletter in the mail, packed with seasonal tips, plant highlights, helpful reminders, and a good dose of Behnke personality.

Thanks to Behnke’s Operations & Web Manager, Larry Bristow; he was able to upload nearly every issue from those years. It is funny how, while I knew we put them on the website, I never really referred to them. Yet there they were, just waiting to be rediscovered.

Whether you’re a longtime Behnke friend or new to our community, it’s like opening a time capsule of garden goodness. You’ll find advice that’s still incredibly useful today, and maybe even spot an old favorite plant or two.

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.

  1. If anyone ever comes across the two issues I could never track down please let me know. I would love to add them and complete our collection.

The two issues we still need are….
    1997 – Volume 4 – Issue 2
    1998 – Volume 5 – Issue 1

    Thanks
    Larry B
