Flight of the Pollinators

flight of the pollinators
Last week, I watched one of the best kids’ shows with my 5-year-old grandson, Robert. Wild Kratts has been out for a few years, but it was new to Robert. He was so excited when the show started. He got up and started tapping the footstool like a drum and stamping his feet to the beat of the music.

Oma, this is such a great show; you will love it, he told me. I started to watch and was amazed that the show began with these two men, who I think are brothers, talking about what else? Pollinators! Excellent! Suddenly, they turned into cartoon people as they decided they needed an up-close and personal explanation of how pollination happens. When a miniaturized Chris gets covered with pollen, he sticks to a bee and gets carried off into the world of the pollinators.

This became a beautiful adventure that my grandson enjoyed and asked questions about. His parents had a vase of lilies, so we got that down so he could see what would stick to the bees and other critters in the show. I could show him the pollen that dropped off the stamen. The show was about 25 minutes long and was very interesting. You can find it on PBS KIDS.

Robert told me this was his new favorite show, and I understand that later that night, he was explaining pollination to his parents. In checking out their YouTube channel, I saw an episode called The Toughest Honey Bee and another called Voyage of the Butterfly. I can’t wait to watch some of them with Robert.

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
