Local Independent Garden Centers

If you have been following me, you know that I am all about supporting local independent business. And when it comes to buying your plants and supplies for your home or for gifts, I am all about the IGC’s (Independent Garden Centers).

Suppose you are like me and are on Facebook or other social media. In that case, you are starting to see many of your local independent garden centers showing you beautiful photos of early Spring-blooming annuals, perennials, and woody plants. Even as I write this, I am getting posts welcoming the first day of Spring.

It sorta makes one want to visit a garden center! Time to get out in the yard and see what survived the winter. I am not much on getting out in the yard except to take pictures and, ooh and ahh over each plant that is popping up. But my husband is great at it and keeps me informed on what is what. But going to a garden center is something I am ready to do.

I wanted to share with you some of the beautiful places in our backyards here in Maryland that I love to visit. So please stop by one, or drop me a message if you have another favorite you like to shop. I would love to check them out.

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.

  1. Greenstreet Gardens Lothian, MD is a good garden center They also have a center in Alexandria, VA which I go to.

  2. Frank’s Produce and Greenhouse, 6686 Old Waterloo Road, Elkridge, MD 21075 is wonderful!
Blue Water Baltimore’s Herring Run Nursery specializes in plants native to the Chesapeake Bay watershed. 6131 Hillen Road, Baltimore, MD 21239

    1. I always loved checking out other garden centers when I had our wholesale nursery. I would take the delv. and then shop.. LOL but once I was back fulltime at Behnke’s I only got to visit in the off seasons! Now being retired and with Behnke’s closed I can get out and about more. I think I need to come see you guys this Spring! I feel the need 😉

  3. Thank you for your list. I shop at all three of the following –
