Maryland Weather, 6 Degrees To 70 In One Week

Zoe Bike Riding
How about the weather we had last Friday and Saturday? Four Seasons in one week. I almost felt like I was in Florida! Going from 6 inches of snow and 6 degrees to no snow and 70 degrees! In one week, I watched three of our grandchildren go sleigh riding out back. I could hear their screams and laughter as they flew down the back hill. For little Robert (5), it was the first real snow he could remember, and he had the time of his life on that big old hill. A hill that has seen three generations of sleigh riding, starting with my husband and his brother to my kids and now my grandchildren.

When you have weather like that, there is only one thing to do. Get out and learn to ride your bike!! Our granddaughter, Zoe, has been working on her bike riding skills for a while now. This little girl of ours is one determined child, and she said, I am going to do this!! With lots of starts and stops, getting her balance, and a ton of encouragement from her brother, mom, and, of course, my husband and me, she did it!!! At one point, she told her grandfather, “let go! I CAN DO IT!”

I laughed as I heard her brother, Aaron, telling her to focus and look ahead. He kept telling her she had it; if she could do it, he would buy her a stuffed animal. The motivation was the name of the game on Saturday. By the end of the day, she yelled, ” Oma, Granddad, look at me!!!

As I am writing this article this drizzly morning (Sunday), we can hear her bike bell. There she is! Raincoat, boots, and a big smile as she goes round and round. Even her brother came out to do a little race down the driveway. Of course, being Zoe, there were a lot of stops and starts, and she explained that she had to be careful not to run over all the worms in the driveway. I am pretty sure by the time she went inside, she had moved them all into the grass to be safe.

So you go, little Zoe! Today, you mastered riding your bike; tomorrow, the world! How blessed we are to live next door and see her excitement.

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
