Signs of Spring: Nature’s Wake-Up Call

Every year, there’s a moment when I can feel that spring is really on its way. It’s not just the calendar telling me, it’s the subtle shifts in nature, the little signs that winter is loosening its grip.

Right now, in Western Howard County, I’m seeing those signs everywhere. The grass is greening up, daffodils and crocuses are blooming, and my stepfather’s hellebores are putting on a show. Even the trees in my backyard have a bit of color, a promise of new leaves to come.

And it’s not just the plants! The robins are busy hopping around looking for worms I guess, and our bluebirds are busy staking out their nesting boxes, ready to raise their next brood. The days are getting longer, and I love how that extra bit of evening light makes everything feel just a little more hopeful.

Spring also means it’s time to get back outside, dig in the dirt, and maybe even venture out to local events! This weekend, I’ll be at the Howard County Spring Craft Fair, surrounded by beautiful handmade items and fellow vendors excited for the season ahead. If you’re in the area, stop by and say hello!

And speaking of fresh starts, I’ve got some special spring deals waiting for you—scroll down to check them out! 🌿✨

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
