The Best Time For Planting Is Fall

Fall annuals of pansy, cabbage and mums
Fall, some will say, is the best time of the year. I love Spring (saying goodbye to Winter is the best), but Fall has many appealing things to consider.

Growing up surrounded by nurserymen, of course, I knew that Fall is the BEST time to plant your trees and shrubs, but seeing how beautiful some of your annuals are before that first frost has always been something.

When my husband and I used to have a wholesale nursery and grew thousands and thousands of annuals, I was always sad to see landscapers pulling out gorgeous plants to install our Fall crops of garden mums, pansies, kale, and cabbage.

Garden mums and other Fall annuals are typically more tolerant of light frosts like we had this past Sunday night out in my area and cooler temperatures. This means you can still enjoy their flowers well into late Fall, even as the temperatures go down.

I love how the selection of Fall annuals can complement other seasonal decor like pumpkins, gourds, and scarecrows. The easy maintenance is also a plus as, for the most part, they do not need as much attention as our Summer annuals. Plus, there is nothing so special as seeing a happy container of pansies blooming on your porch. Even better is when you see their smiling faces peeking up at you in the Winter!

This Fall, I have been so busy that I have done nothing except for a scarecrow my granddaughter and husband put up in the front yard! I need to visit one of the many local garden centers near me and get my Fall on!! On my list are pumpkins, pansies, and a few garden mums. Maybe a cornstalk and some Indian corn.

Have you decorated for Fall yet? If so, I would love to see what you have done! You can share your pictures on our Facebook page or email them to me.

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
