Share Your Favorite Plants from Behnke’s with Hashtag #bornatbehnkes

From Stephanie

This past week Mary Ann B. posted the following on our Facebook Site:

“When I very sadly told my daughter who now lives in Norway that Behnkes was closing she had a grand idea. Keep it going by posting “born at Behnkes” photos!”

She then shared two very beautiful photos of trees in her yard and a trend was born. So many are reaching out and sharing their gardens, that I started a new hashtag: #bornatbehnkes. So if you’re on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, we would love for you to use the hashtag and share your favorite plants from Behnke’s. If you’re like my husband and don’t know what a hashtag is but still want to share, just post the photos anyway on one of our sites and I am sure folks will enjoy them.

I have been sharing everyone’s messages and photos with my mother, Sonja Behnke Festerling, who loves seeing and hearing them. She smiles with joy when I read a memory from someone who has been shopping with us for decades or even someone who just started because they bought a new home and their neighbors told them to come to Behnke’s.

Once again, thank you very much for all the well-wishes you’re sending. I hope you find time to come out to see us before June. We are very busy bringing more and more plants and products in each day so you can have a new #bornatbehnkes plant for your home or garden.

See you at the garden center!

Behnke Nurseries, VP

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.

  1. Dear Behnke Family Members and Wonderful Staff:

While I too, am one of the thousands of gardeners who are very sad that Behnke’s will be closing soon, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your exceptional service and high quality plants and products that you provided and nurtured over the many decades. I also would like to let you know that Behnke’s has been more to me than just the place to enjoy exceptional flowers, perennials and Christmas trees – your store has been there for me as I grew up and during those moments when life and gardening intersected. Many years ago in the late 1980’s when I was a young college student, my German Shepherd passed away in early winter, so I went to Behnke’s with $8 to see if I could find a few bulbs to plant in the garden that we wanted to dedicate to her. When I found a bag of bulbs for $9.99, I must have stood there for a while. A very nice staff member came up to me and asked if I needed help. We had just come back from the vet that day, and I told her why I was there. She told me to wait for a few minutes, and then came back and told me to pick out 5 bags of bulbs for my dog’s garden for no additional cost. The kindness and touching gift that was extended to me that day is something that I will never forget, and it spoke volumes about the integrity of the company and its dedication to giving back to the community. Needless to say, I became a very loyal Behnke’s fan and every year I went multiple times to purchase the best quality plants to enjoy on our gardens.
Please except my heartfelt appreciation to all of you – you will be dearly missed!
