Deers and Eagles

I heard a loud thump late Saturday night and knew someone had hit a deer. Indeed when we got up Sunday morning, there she was. It is always sad to see this happen, even though those dear deer tend to mow down all my plants. Even though we called Animal Control to come to pick up the deer, we knew that, being a weekend and where we live, we would never see that happen. (they arrived on Tuesday and only had bones to remove: too much info, I know). But as with everything, nature has its way, and sure enough, the different birds of prey and other animals were swooping down. Pretty soon, the Bald Eagles decided it was their turn.

Even though it was upsetting to watch, we could not stop, for these eagles are so magnificent. AND BIG!! Even our cat Teddy could not stop watching. I bet I took over a hundred photos during the day and even some videos that I put to music on something called ‘Reels”.

Free Bird Reel

For one video I did, I just had to add the song Free Bird to it and then post it. So I showed my husband, and he told me that Garry Rossington, lead guitarist & last original member of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, had died that day. While I am a country music girl, I have always enjoy this band and many others.

At one point, my brother-in-law dragged the deer off the side of the road so no one would hit the eagles. Although each time a car would fly by, they would fly off, unlike the vultures that must be used to the traffic. It was almost funny watching how annoyed the one eagle would get when someone would pull over to take pictures of them. They would sit a bit, watch everything and then start marching (yes, they march) back to their prize.

Toward the end of the day, we had three eagles trying to help themselves. It was a glorious sight to watch as they swooped in and out, finally ending up in the old tree and the cell tower on the farm.

A friend of mine goes to Conowingo Dam and has taken such amazing photographs. So I am planning a trip sometime this Spring.

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.

  1. Good Morning! A very interesting post. I love to watch eagles, too. Just FYI re Conowingo Dam – I read in an article that November is supposedly the best time to go watch the eagles there because it is mating season. I’m not sure how accurate that is, but do be sure to do your research before you go to help you know where exactly the best viewing spots are and when the best time is.
