Weeding & Planting Peas

As long as I have known my in-laws, they have had a vegetable garden. As their parents before them, it was just what you do. You grow enough for a year’s worth of canning and freezing, along with extra for family and friends. A few years ago, my father-in-law, Marshall, put these raised garden beds in for my mother-in-law, Jane. And each year, sometime in March, she would start preparing the beds.
However, he passed away last January, and with the weather and numerous tasks that needed to be completed, the garden was put on the back burner. But those weeds were growing, and time was passing by. Jane’s (my mother-in-law) asparagus was popping up surrounded by the weeds. Last week, on that beautiful day in Maryland, my husband, Jon, was mowing and reached down to pull a few weeds, only to find that they came out pretty easily (he had been waiting for rain). He ended up weeding all the beds. With his mother supervising and helping, they got the garden back in shape. Plus, they planted the peas. It might be a little late, or a lot late, but who cares? It’s done.
How is your garden doing? Are you ready to get your tender vegetable plants? Remember, for many in Maryland, the last frost date is typically around Mother’s Day. If you must buy the plants, you will need to protect them from the cold weather.
