A Brick Full of Memories

This little brick is more than just a planter, it’s a piece of my childhood home and one of Behnke’s Bests, Larry Bristow’s legacy.

It comes from the little brick house that once stood at the back of Behnke Nurseries in Beltsville, where Larry lived the longest and raised his family. It’s also where I grew up, surrounded by the nursery.

When the house was taken down, Larry made sure to save a few of these bricks, preserving the memories they held. His sister, Lori decided to give them new life, turning them into planters that continue to bring joy and growth—just as the old brick house once did for all of us who lived there.

This planter isn’t just a home for these vibrant succulents; it’s a piece of the brick house that holds history, keeping those memories close no matter where we are. A reminder of the roots we never really leave behind.

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
