Making Memories
It all started years ago. My love of Christmas and the decorating of THE TREE! Growing up at Behnke’s, I was so lucky to be able to pick out very special ornaments each year in our Christmas Shop.

I have written about Adrienne Neff many times in the past. She is the talent behind most of our wonderful creative props/crafts/works-of-art you see while shopping at Behnke’s. Working with Susan O’Hara in our graphics department, the two of them make Behnke’s shine.
So many things can trigger memories, old photos, a certain song, the smells of something wonderful cooking in the oven, they all bring memories.
Walking though the greenhouse the other day I was drawn to the many different Rex Begonias and other foliage begonias that we have. On each of the tables were BIG BEAUTIFUL Pots of begonias with little signs in them saying…..
A few years ago, our garden center manager, Sissy McKenzie, came to us with a idea! A FREE area for kids to be kids–to play games and have fun. As a result, you will be seeing a lot of activities geared to our young gardeners throughout the year.
Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s in Beltsville, under the watchful eye of mother Sonja Behnke Festerling, and the doting eyes of grandparents Albert and Rose Behnke. She was weeding from the moment she could walk, and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run. So many weeds, so little time.
Hello All! Thank you for welcoming me to the Behnke’s Garden Blog. My name is Jessica Crawford and I have long since come to terms with the fact that I am addicted to my garden.
My grandather, Albert Behnke, used to raise goldfish in this pond, along with water lilies, for sale at the garden center. Mom said she used to love seeing the beautiful blooms and they loved to watch the frogs.
A few years ago, Behnke’s president, Alfred Millard, and the Emmanuel United Methodist Church came up with the idea of a community garden to help with their Food Bank. They do a monthly food distribution at EUMC church in Beltsville.
We are pleased to announce that 5 of the wonderful Potomac staff will also be coming back home to Beltsville. Bill Mann, Constance Cleaveland, Orion Taylor, Terri Poindexter and Christopher Lewis will all be working in Beltsville.
I’d heard about the Potomac store opening. I went to check it out. I hadn’t worked at Behnkes at Beltsville for four or five years then, because we had moved out to our current house for a life of commuting. Who should be there as manager, but Alex Dencker…. Within 30 seconds I was being fitted out for a Behnke’s employee T-shirt, whether I wanted it or not. The rest is, as they say, history.
Behnke Nursery Garden Center and Florist at Potomac will be moving back home to our flagship garden center in Beltsville as the key to our long-term plan to “grow” the company.
