How are you doing?

I am still processing how our country, our world, have shut down because of this virus. I think of so many that are struggling, wondering how to make ends meet, the business owners that are worried about their employees and companies. The truck drivers that are trying to get products to the grocery stores while hoping their families are okay. Our parents, the most vulnerable. And our first responders who are right out there in the middle of all of this.

I ask myself, what can I do to help? I went ahead and bought a few gift cards from some local restaurants and businesses. I am staying home except to drive to my mother’s every morning to check on her. I cannot take a chance of getting something from somewhere and giving it to her or her husband.

I think we all need to just take a moment and look around. We can garden in our yards. We can take amazing photos of all the blooms that will be appearing each day as Spring gets nearer.

We can work on our houseplants: do they need repotting? Maybe that old Boston Fern of yours needs a good soaking in the shower? Is it time to fertilizer some of your house plants? How are your seeds doing that you bought in February? Are you planning your vegetable garden?

If you need soil, mulch or something else, call some of the local garden centers and see if they will deliver. Most are coming up with unique plans to help all of us get through this time. Plus, they can really use the business.

I wish everyone good health and know that we miss all of you very much!

Take care,

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
