Raking Leaves…Priceless

Who can resist a big pile of leaves in the Fall? Not my grandson, Aaron, that’s for sure! Last week began the art of teaching young Aaron how to rake up leaves. His grandfather got out his rake and of course Aaron needed to help. There they were, raking the leaves out of the corners so Great Granddad could pick them up with his mower and the decision was made… time to show Aaron how much fun a pile of leaves could be. It did not take long to make a pretty large pile of leaves and then it only took Granddad saying “JUMP!” and into the leaves he went. Over and over again.

By the way, if you’re wondering just why my grandson, his great granddad, my husband and I are all together so much, the answer is simple: our daughter and her husband recently bought the house next door to us. It had belonged to my husband’s parents before they moved into the house next to it, which had been my husband’s grandmother’s home. It really is much simpler than it sounds!

I am so blessed. I grew up next door to my grandparents right here at Behnke’s. My children got to grow up next door to my husband’s parents and grandparents and now Aaron will be growing up next door to us. Best yet, his other grandparents are not too far away. Life is good.

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
