Vacation Time

As most of you know, I have been going through many of my families records and photos. One got me to thinking of the times my grandparents would take us on long summer vacations out West as we called it. Albert and Rose Behnke loved to travel, and one of their favorite trips was to drive out to see the Black Hills of South Dakota and then driving to see Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial.

Over the years they had made many friends in all parts of the country, but those places were very special to them. My grandparents always supported the Ziolkowski family and their tribute to the Oglala Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse, riding a horse and pointing into the distance. The other thing that they loved to do was collecting rocks. Big and small and beautiful. Back when they would travel out West, they would find these beautiful stones and would carefully pick out the ones that they loved.

They did this for many years knowing that one day they would use them somehow. That day came in 1965 when they built their dream home in Burtonsville, Maryland and incorporated these stones into the fireplace. It was the one part of that home I wished I could have kept. I wish I had a photo of that fireplace to share with you. Agate, Amethyst, Rose quartz, and so many others. Did you know that the best place for finding Rose Quartz is in the Black Hills? Some stones they found like amethyst are not from the Black Hills, but they would buy different ones whenever they could.

Everyone has different things they love to do on vacation. For me, this year was doing absolutely positively nothing but be with some of my family. Cooking and playing games with my grandchildren and not going out anywhere but at the beach. For my grandparents, it was discovering the wonders of America while leaving time to visit other nurseries along the way.

One year I went with them, and after spending time in the Black Hills, we ended up in California at Monrovia Nurseries, a company that Behnke Nurseries had a long and terrific relationship with them. What is your favorite thing to do on vacation? Is it traveling to places unknown? Or do you like going to the mountains and beaches? Maybe you want to stay at home and take care of projects that never get done. Or if you’re like me, do nothing. The main thing is I hope you can spend time doing something you enjoy. We all need to regroup, and vacation time helps us all with that.

Behnke Nurseries, VP

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
