And just like that we are welcoming our newest grandchild to our family. Last Thursday night, January 12, 2023, Elizabeth Rose Fleming arrived and I fell in love once again. Her big brother Robert (4) is so excited about his baby sister. She loves hearing his voice and apparently when he sings to her she falls asleep.

I have to think my grandmother, Rose Behnke, is grinning from ear to ear having yet another of her grands with her name. And Elizabeth Rose is her Great, Great, Granddaughter.

My grandparents were blessed with 10 grandchildren. And they loved each one of us so much. My children were lucky to have both sets of their grandparents in their lives while growing up and now my husband and I can add one more to our crew of grands.

I have written before each time a new grandchild arrived and the joy in my heart is the same each time. I actually think I fell in love as soon as my son and his wife told us (actually their son told us) that they were expecting. But after holding little Elizabeth, I was struck at just how lucky I am. This little girl is going to do such wonderful things and she has the bonus of having her brother and cousins nearby to play with and become best friends. Her cousin Zoe (6) is already planning on babysitting and her other cousin Aaron (10) was so excited to be able to hold her.

Here is another one of my why’s. Why I keep writing about Behnke Nurseries almost 4 years after we closed. My hope is this beautiful granddaughter of mine along with her brother and cousins will one day go back and read some of these ramblings I do each week. Maybe learn a little of their history of their great great grandparents and about my mom (Sonja Behnke Festerling), their great grandmother. How mom would have loved all these children. She always said being a grandmother was the best and she was so right.

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
