Larry Hurley’s Photo Of The Week: A Pollinator Christmas

Just because they aren’t flying around now because it’s winter doesn’t mean that we should forget about our pollinators.

Gardeners are coming around to the idea of leaving some debris in place overwinter (for example: allowing fallen tree leaves to remain on flower beds; not cutting back every shriveled perennial stalk until spring and so on because they provide shelter for overwintering insects or their eggs or larvae; even leaving fallen tree branches in place if you have a woodsy spot in the garden). But hey, we can be a wee bit festive as well, as in the case of this Christmas wreath we made for the mud dauber wasp larvae that were overwintering in these mud tubes on the side of our front entry.

All creatures, great and small, and all that.
