Time To Get My Poinsettias

Last Friday, I drove to Cockeysville, Maryland, and stopped in to see our friends at Valley View Farms Garden Center & Nursery off of York Road. I needed a poinsettia, plus I wanted to visit their Christmas Shop.

One of the first things I noticed was all the happy, helpful folks working for Valley View. As soon as I walked into the main store, I was greeted with a smile. I have to say I came to a complete stop as I gazed at their Christmas Wonderland. What I would have given to have a building like this (not a greenhouse) to use when we set up our Christmas Shop each year at Behnke’s. I loved all the theme trees with everything right next to them. It made shopping so simple.

However, I was on a mission for a poinsettia, so I kept moving, figuring I would wander around the Christmas Shop on my way out.

Valley View Farms Grows Their Own!

Once in the greenhouse, I was delighted to see so many choices of poinsettias. They have a great selection of sizes and varieties. Valley View grows their poinsettias and most of their other plants on their family farm in Hydes, MD., and you can see the quality of the plants.

Do you know that feeling I have mentioned in the past about your body relaxing when you walk into a garden center? Well, I could feel it walking around this greenhouse. First, of course, there was the cyclamen that I love but also a fantastic assortment of houseplants, including Orchids and African Violets! (yes, I bought one).

Don’t Forget The Birds

When you drive into Valley View Farms Garden Center, you will see a big blue separate building with their Water Garden & Wild Bird Supplies next to their Fish House. Of course no fish right now, but when I walked in to check out the birdseed, I was amazed at all the supplies for your water gardens. So if you have any water feature or are thinking about getting one, you really should stop in.

Independent Local Garden Centers, Always The Best

Below is a short video with Carrie Engel, Valley View Farms greenhouse manager. Like Behnke’s, Valley View Farms has created an independent family-owned garden center where their employees love where they work. Family is the word I always used about Behnke’s staff, and I can see that the same feelings are with Valley View’s staff.

By the way, check-out was fast and straightforward with social distancing practices in place. I checked out twice, as I decided to go back and buy something else, and both times, even with the long line, I was through it in less than 5 minutes. Both times their cashiers were so friendly and fast! Having someone open the door for me to leave was a bonus when your hands are full of treasures!

I hope you can stop in and check this garden center out. I can’t wait to go back in the Spring!

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
