Eclipse, The Behnke Way

Like many across the country, everyone here was excited about the solar eclipse last Monday afternoon. For weeks we were all talking about it and then one of our regular customers who happens to work at NASA brought solar watching glasses for everyone at Behnke’s.  Terri, from our Annuals Department, was great in making sure we all had a pair of these special NASA glasses before the big day. Google searches had us prepared on the time and how to watch. Alfred, our company’s President, declared we would close our registers for 1/2 hour so everyone could go outside and watch! Expectations were high and laughter loud as we all assembled to see it.  Afterwards, Anita, also from our Annuals Department, surprised everyone with a Happy Eclipse Day cake! How wonderful it was to put aside our To Do Lists for a little while and enjoy this day with each other.

I have seen so many photos of the actual eclipse itself. But what I liked the best was the smiles on our faces as we reverted to little kids while looking through the special glasses. Next one is in 7 years…will you be ready? I sure will be!

by Stephanie Fleming, Behnke’s Vice President

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
