The Beyond Behnke’s Gardening Podcast Is LIVE!!

It’s official! I know everyone has been waiting to listen to my first ever podcast! I hope you enjoy my first guest!
Since it is the beginning of February, I wanted to have someone that knows all about orchids. So my first guest is someone many of Behnke’s customers knew well. Check out the podcast and listen to our conversation about orchids and a little about everything else.

Valentine’s Day, Busy Time For Florists

Of course, roses typically are the #1 Valentine’s gift, and florist shops worldwide are gearing up for one of their biggest days of the year. At Behnke’s, our florist, Evelyn, would be busy about now making sure she had everything ordered for when the roses arrived. Then it would be all hands on deck. Finally, we all got to help put together the beautiful bouquets you would send to each other.

However, at the same time, there would be those few select people that would walk in, look around, and want a ‘REAL’ plant for their sweetheart. It worked for us as we would have hundreds of plants from which to choose. From African Violets to Living Valentines, we had what they wanted. The biggest seller would be orchids. While we would sell orchids pretty much year-round, on Valentine’s Day we would sell the most. February was also when the National Capital Orchid Society would hold their annual NCOS Show and Sale at our nursery. So many orchids, so little time.

This year, Homestead Gardens will be hosting the NCOS annual 2022 Orchid Show and Sale on February 19-21, and I hope you will take some time to stop in and check it out. It is FREE to attend. It is well worth your time to wander around the exhibits put on by so many well-known Orchid Societies. You will see orchids that many of us never really get the chance to see, plus they will have experts there to give us advice.

See You At The NCOS Show & Sale

The NCOS Orchid Show & Sale is a terrific opportunity to buy some of the rarer orchids that garden centers typically do not carry. Some of the best orchid growers in the area will be there, and I know I can’t wait to stop in and see so many old friends. Plus, maybe buy another orchid. Because you know, there is always room for one more orchid.

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
