Now for a little more news about Pete Exis. Before I go any further, I want to let you know that Zabrene Scapes is going strong, and their work ethic is what all of us expect of a landscaper. So be assured if you decide to hire their company, they will get the job done. However, Pete is going through some significant health issues, and for those of you that know him, I decided to use this email to let you know what is going on and how you can help.

Pete was diagnosed with Large B cell Lymphoma one year ago. He was hoping to be in remission within six months; however, back in April, his Lymphoma returned with more aggression. Pete underwent another harsher treatment. By the end of the month, his body rejected it; he had a heart attack as well as a stroke shortly after. He lost part of his vision in his left field of view and can no longer drive.

At the moment, Pete is a lucky candidate for CAR T Gene Therapy treatment that appears to be highly hopeful. It does not come with its risks, though, and he is once again in a life or death scenario.

The treatment requires him to stay near the hospital facility (John Hopkins in Baltimore) for at least an entire month.

The past year has taken a toll on Pete and his loved ones. He has not been able to work as efficiently and has lost his independence to drive. Walter has been able to get him to different jobs and meetings with clients.

The past year has also brought unexpected trips to the emergency room where his insurance does not cover the costs.

Pete is confident in this new treatment. However, if you would like to help, a Go Fund Me page has been established to help cover housing and medical expenses.

For those who know Pete, you know he is one of the most positive people around. Always with a big smile and kind words to share. His passion for life and everything to do with gardening is what has always drawn me to him.

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
