Small Spaces With Zabrene Scapes

A few weeks ago, I was invited to see some work that Pete and Walter from Zabrene Scapes had recently completed in Greenbelt. As I drove through the Government Farms to the Cantwell home, it brought back so many memories of growing up nearby and all the times we would go around the area.

I have been interested in seeing just what could be done with a small back yard and I have to say I was amazed at the oasis that the Cantwell’s had created in their backyard over the years. You could tell right away that this family loved to garden and loved being outside.

The Cantwell’s hired Zabrene Scapes for two projects. The first one was to put in permeable pavers to help with the water runoff. They then put in a retaining wall and re-leveled the flagstone around the Cantwell’s fishpond. I loved the new patio area they put in, where they can now sit and enjoy their fire pit. And the giant boulder step leading up to it was fantastic. (Sometime I will have to write about my grandfather, Albert Behnke’s love of boulders). I have always loved stone walls in a garden along with stone steps.

While talking to Walter about this project, I could feel the excitement as he explained how passionate he and Pete are when creating small spaces for clients. He mentioned that many people think what they want might be too small of a project to contact them, but there is never a job too large or too small for these guys. .

They both are all about creating something that maximizes your outdoor living experience. After seeing the many different gardens these two have completed over the years, I see the benefit of what just a small addition to an area can do. Maybe it is making a quiet corner with a stone bench or showing you how a Japanese-style garden would fit perfectly in your yard. These guys have so many ideas that they will share with you. The bottom line is they want to help you capture your vision. Better yet, they will work with you if you’re going to do some of the work yourself or want them to do the whole project.

Pete mentioned that sometimes folks are not sure what they want and are a little anxious to ask. That is precisely why they are there to help you plan out what would work best for you and your budget. While walking around the Cantwell’s garden, Mrs. Cantwell told me how easy it was to work with Zabrene Scapes. She said they were very respectful of their time and would listen to their ideas. Plus, when she made a few changes, they were never a problem.

Walter also shared with me how creating space does not stop when the job is done. So if you want, they are there for you to do yard clean-up in the Spring and Fall. They also help with creating rain gardens and even will help you put in a vegetable garden. You can see more of their work on their website or Instagram page.

A few other things that Walter mentioned is that now is the time to schedule your holiday lighting (they put up and take down) along with Fall and Winter garden decorations like the porch pots we used to do at Behnke’s.

You can reach them by filling out their contact form, and they will be more than happy to set up a FREE at-home estimate. You can also contact Walter at 301-557-0061.

Stephanie Fleming

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
