What! Christmas Already?

department 56

If you have been by our garden center you just might have seen the Behnke elves hard at work, sweating up a storm in the Christmas Shop. I love love love the expressions on your faces as you push your carts by and see us hanging garland and unpacking all of our new Christmas items. We just smile and say that your just imagining it, we really are not there. Or we grin and say it takes the Behnke elves a while to make it look magical.

This year Orion Taylor has outdone himself with the way he is setting up the shop. We have moved all of our German collections to the far end of the shop and will be turning the classroom into our “production area” so you will be able to watch us making our designer wreaths, table pieces, and of course, our Winter porch pots.

I am really excited about bringing back the Department 56 Snow Village Collections to Behnke’s. It has been years since we have carried this line, but with all the new pieces we felt that the time was right. I remember back in 1976 or 77 when Snow Village first came out, my Aunt Ele Behnke decided to carry the line. As the years passed, collections grew and grew and long lines would form to be the first into our Christmas shop to get the new releases. Then Dept 56 started retiring different houses and adding more villages. Before you knew it, you would have Snow Village, Alpine Village, Christmas in the City, Dickens Village and of course the fun North Pole collection.

If you are like me, I just bet you have a few pieces packed away somewhere. Mine are on shelves in our basement. If your children have grown and moved out maybe you just did not feel the need to set it all up again. But what about if this year you go ahead and put a few pieces up? Create a special Christmas Snow Village scene. I guarantee you will be glad you did. It will bring back so many memories plus if you have grandchildren you will get to see the wonder in their eyes as you light up the houses. I hope you find time to stop and see our large Snow Village display.

by Stephanie Fleming, Behnke’s Vice President

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
