When you stop by during these next few weeks, you will see so many changes in our store decor. Orion and his crew of merry elves have been busy since mid-September, hanging the garland and stringing the lights. And while…yes…our Christmas Shop has been up and running for over a month, now is the time to get the rest of the nursery ready for the Christmas season while trying our best to not forget Thanksgiving. It’s that “in-between” time where displays go up and come down in a matter of weeks.

Yesterday I saw the old one-horse sled my husband bought make its way to our front-of-store display, and the Halloween merchandise move back to the sales area of “Seasons Past.” Then on my way out I had to laugh because there, up on a beam in the ceiling, was our “Elf On The Shelf” surrounded by soon-to-come-down Fall flags. Made by Adrienne in graphics last year as the Christmas Shop’s Halloween scarecrow, the Elf was repurposed back into our Christmas decor. I wonder if he will be appearing in different locations throughout the nursery like he does in our homes. I think we really need to give this large Elf a name. Any suggestions, send them to me at sfleming@behnkes.com.

This year we have decided to move our fresh greens (roping, garland, bunches and wreaths) over to near where our cut Christmas trees will be sold. For the last month there has been a lot of moving, with the bonsai display now near perennial sales area, the former bonsai sales area now being readied to display all of these cut greens and trees! You will also be able to watch custom wreaths being created along with beautiful centerpieces. I understand that our first shipment of Christmas greens and trees will be arriving next week so that area will be opening up!  Stop by and enjoy the beautiful sights and scents of the season.

But we cannot forget that Thanksgiving still has not arrived and we all have so much to be thankful for. Even though we have have the jingle of Christmas around the garden center we will still be celebrating the upcoming holiday, Thanksgiving.  Each year, our staff enjoys a grand Thanksgiving feast with a pot luck lunch that is complete with turkey, ham and of course pie. We will be closed on Thanksgiving Day so we all can spend it with our family and friends.

From our family to yours, have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving.

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
