Oakleaf Hydrangea – Alfred’s Pick for October

I asked Behnke President Alfred Millard if he has a favorite plant for October, and he sure does:

“One of my favorites is the Oakleaf hydrangea- beautiful fall color, rich burgundy and maroon foliage. In winter exfoliating bark is interesting, and you cannot beat the massive panicles of white in summer. A plant for all seasons.  Alfred”

Nice pick!  It’s at the top of my list of favorite plants, too.  For you Latin-lovers, it’s Hydrangea quercifolia.

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
