Picking The Perfect Christmas Tree

This one! No, this one. How about this one Mommy? I think this one is beautiful! So it went last Saturday when Aaron and his mommy and daddy came to the garden center to pick out their Christmas Tree. While my daughter, Jaimie, took her time and examined each and every tree, her husband and son just kept picking out one after another.

I have always gotten a Fraser Fir. Every year after I was married, my grandfather gave us a Fraser from the nursery Christmas tree lot.  He said they were his very favorite fresh-cut Christmas trees. So this year I thought I would gift my daughter’s family with one.  While looking at the beautiful trees, I noticed her eyes kept going back to the Noble Firs. I have to admit, I have never really paid much attention to them over the years. Just went right to the Frasers.  While noticeably a little more money they were just that. Noble! The one that she kept walking around was simply perfect and since I knew she had some very heavy ornaments to put on the tree that we were giving her I said, “let’s get it!”

Back to Aaron, our grandson. He was so very excited but I think pushing the carts, picking up the cut off ends of the tree and skipping around the tree lot were the highlights of his day. I wish my grandparents, Albert and Rose Behnke, could have been there to see the joy in his face as he watched Christoper Lewis get his tree ready to take home. I am not  sure what my grandfather would have said about not getting a Fraser, but something tells me he would have just smiled and said, “Oh, that one is perfect.”

Stephanie Fleming, Behnke’s Vice President

Stephanie Fleming was raised at Behnke’s Nurseries in Beltsville. Her Mom, Sonja, was one of Albert & Rose Behnke’s four children. She was weeding from the moment she could walk and hiding as soon as she was old enough to run, so many weeds, so little time. Although she quickly learned how to pull out a perennial and get taken off of weed pulling duty.
